Southwest Virginia residents faces HUNGER.
Food Insecurity, or a lack of consistent access to enough nutritious food for an active, healthy life, often looks like tough choices. It can mean hunger is only one flat tire or an illness away. Parents skipping meals so their kids can eat. Seniors missing meals so they can pay for medications. Even food bank clients who work two jobs must often choose between paying an electric bill or buying groceries.

Children who suffer from poor nutrition during the brain’s most formative years score lower on tests of vocabulary, reading comprehension, arithmetic and general knowledge. Kids who have enough to eat during the day concentrate better, act out less and have improved academic performance over time.

When families face impossible choices, Feeding Southwest Virginia provides the safety net they can turn to and keep food on the table. We work with other hunger relief partners to find new solutions, shorten the line, and keep our distribution network strong year after year.

Sometimes a tornado or other natural disaster comes along and the food bank helps teams respond. Our programs are also there when a personal crisis arises like the loss of a job or an unexpected medical bill.
